EXTREMELY FINE GEM. EASILY ONE OF THE FINEST USED 6-CENT 1869 ISSUE STAMPS EXTANT. AN UNBELIEVABLY HUGE STAMP.

We have only seen two examples of the 6c 1869 Issue with these margins: the copy offered here and one offered in our Sale 818 (lot 661, realized $2,500 hammer).

With 1984 P.F. certificate (Image)

223 bl image6c Ultramarine (115). Block of four, brilliant color and detailed impression, neat town circular datestamp and quartered cork cancels, few perf separations sensibly reinforced, small closed tear at bottom left

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS PROBABLY THE FINEST OF THE TWO OR THREE KNOWN USED BLOCKS OF THE 6-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE. A WONDERFUL RARITY.

In his book United States Postage Stamps of 1869, Jonathan Rose records only two or three used blocks. To underscore their rarity, none was present in either the Juhring, Rose or other specialized collections of the 1869 Pictorials we sold recently.
