1875 Re-Issue of 1861-66 Issue
Lot Sym. Lot Description Est/Cat Realized
207 image1c Blue, Re-Issue (102). Deep rich color on bright white paper, wide margins, New York circular datestamp and "5" duplex cancel, fresh and Very Fine, with 1986 P.F. certificate (Image) 1,000.00 1,700.00
208 image2c Black, Re-Issue (103). Beautifully centered with balanced margins at sides and wide margins at top and bottom, sharp proof-like impression, bold strike of blue target cancellation

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS IS THE SECOND FINEST USED EXAMPLE OF THE 2-CENT BLACK JACK RE-ISSUE. ONLY 18 USED COPIES ARE RECORDED IN OUR CENSUS.

Of the eighteen used 2c Black Jack Re-Issue stamps in our census records, only six are sound and rate a grading of Very Fine or better. The finest copy in existence is the ex-Zoellner copy, which realized $11,000 in 1998. The stamp offered here is the second finest and has the added attraction of a colored cancel. It is followed by four others with centering that is not quite as choice. Of the other four, two have not been seen for over 20 years and, therefore, their condition needs to be verified.

209 image3c Brown Red, Re-Issue (104). Deep rich color and sharp proof-like impression, beautifully centered with well-balanced margins all around, perfect strike of numeral portion of New York Type "F" Supplementary Mail duplex, tiny thin speck barely visible

EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS THE FINEST OF THE SIXTEEN USED EXAMPLES OF THE 3-CENT 1861 RE-ISSUE RECORDED IN OUR CENSUS RECORDS.

Our census contains only sixteen used examples of the 3c 1861 Re-Issue. Of these sixteen, the stamp offered here has the most perfect centering. Of the seven sound copies, only one is well-centered enough to even rate the grade of Very Fine. The tiny thin spot in the stamp offered here is negligible when one considers the scarcity of this stamp in well-centered condition.

Only three copies have ever been certified as genuine by the Philatelic Foundation. The fourth example realized $18,000 hammer in our 1998 sale of the Zoellner collection.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. ONE OF THE FINEST OF THE THIRTEEN USED EXAMPLES OF THE 12-CENT RE-ISSUE CONTAINED IN OUR RECORDS.

Our census of Scott 107 contains only thirteen used examples. Of these, five are sound and with centering qualifying as Extremely Fine. Several of these have rather heavy cancels.

VERY FINE. ONLY FOURTEEN USED EXAMPLES OF THE 30-CENT RE-ISSUE ARE RECORDED IN OUR CENSUS.

Our census of used Scott 110 contains only fourteen examples. Of these, exactly half are faulty. Of the seven sound examples, three have perforations touching the design on one side, making this one of the four finest copies extant.

216 image90c Blue, Re-Issue (111). Perfect centering with wide even margins, deep rich color and intense impression on crisp white paper, neatly cancelled by oval grid

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. ONE OF THE TWO FINEST EXAMPLES OF THE 90 CENT 1861 RE-ISSUE IN USED CONDITION. ONLY FOUR USED COPIES ARE KNOWN TO EXIST. AN OUTSTANDING CLASSIC RARITY.

The footnote in Scott Catalogue at the end of the Re-Issue section states that "Five examples are recorded of No. 111 used. Value is for centered and sound example (two are known thus.)" In the course of verifying this census information, we were only able to produce four copies. Consultations with leading experts in the field and with James E. Kloetzel, editor of Scott Catalogue, failed to produce a confirmed fifth copy. If the existence of a fifth copy cannot be confirmed, the Scott Catalogue will be amended starting with next year's edition to reflect the accurate census number.

The four recorded copies of this stamp are as follows: 1) Census No. 111-CAN-01, sound and well-centered stamp, ex Zoellner, lot 275 (realized $40,000), 2) Census No. 111-CAN-02, the stamp offered here, 3) Census No. 111-CAN-03, sound, duplex cancel, centered slightly to top, from our 1986 Rarities sale (lot 97), and 4) Census No. 111-CAN-04, centered to top, small corner creases at top left with one ending in a small tear, offered in the Ameripex auction.
