VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE AND UNUSUAL HAWAIIAN AND UNITED STATES MIXED FRANKING.

A nearly-identical usage (but a cover-front only) from the same sender to a different addressee was sold in our Honolulu Advertiser sale (lot 3252). It is also postmarked at Honolulu on Jan. 22 and San Francisco on Feb. 18, with a pencil 1867 year date. Both covers date from the Tenth Period (12/3/64 to 9/25/67), during which the basic rate from Hawaii to the U.S. was 5c Hawaiian and 5c U.S. (3c plus 2c ship fee). The use of an additional Hawaiian 2c stamp might have been the sender's method of making up the full 5c U.S. postage, and the manuscript cancels could have been applied at an outlying post office (the targets were applied at Honolulu). If this theory is correct, then the 2c Black Jack stamp would have been applied at Honolulu or possibly San Francisco. The cover-front in the Advertiser sale realized $2,000 hammer. The complete cover offered here is worth considerably more. (Image)

408 c image2c Black (73). Used with 5c Brown (76) and 3c Rose (65), cancelled by targets and tied by light strike of "Stamford Ct. Jan. 9, 1864" double-circle datestamp on bank corner card cover to Havana, Cuba, 1864 docketing at left, slightly reduced at top missing top flap, small repair along top edge, still Fine and colorful usage to Cuba (Image) E. 300-400 425.00
409 c image2c Black (73). Horizontal pair, used with vertical pair of 3c Rose (65) and tied by New York City Star in Circle cancels on cover to a naval ensign aboard the U.S.S. Ticonderoga at St. Thomas, Danish West Indies, in care of the U.S. Consul, 2c stamps slightly affected from placement at edge of cover, otherwise Very Fine and fresh, an extremely rare Black Jack usage (Image) E. 1,000-1,500 1,300.00
410 c image2c Black (73). Five singles, arranged slightly overlapping and tied by targets, "Lancaster N.Y. Jul. 4" circular datestamp on cover to Chinandago, Nicaragua, reduced at left, cover worn and stained, stamps have faults, still a presentable and incredibly rare destination with the 10c rate paid entirely by Black Jack stamps (Image) E. 750-1,000 400.00
411 c image2c Black (73). Affixed over illustration of General Fremont on Temperance Organization cover to Hopewell Hill, New Brunswick B.N.A., stamp tied by "Rockland Me." double-circle datestamp, "1c" due marking, Hillsborough backstamp, more than a dozen mostly uninked strikes of Hopewell Hill datestamps (almost as though the postmaster used this envelope as a mat, which may reflect his opinion of temperance advocates), stamp has tiny insignificant tear, fresh and Very Fine, a remarkable usage with Andrew Jackson's portrait substituting for Fremont (comparable to having Dean Martin promote temperance) (Image) E. 1,000-1,500 1,150.00
