Three large margins, close at right, tied by bright blue "New Bedford Mass." circular datestamp on folded letter datelined "San Francisco, July 30, 1855" to New Bedford, pencil "Paid 12-1/2 express" (no to be confused with Ashbrook notes, also in pencil), Very Fine, according to Ashbrook this was carried on the Aug. 1 sailing via Panama -- the last according to the old schedule -- the 12-1/2c express notation is enigmatic E. 200-300 180.00

III (9, 15). 1c single, three huge margins, cut in at top, 10c horizontal pair, large margins to in at bottom, grid cancels, 1c tied by Calais transit on 1855 folded letter to France, red "New Orleans La. Nov. 13" circular datestamp and red New York transit, ms. "8" decimes due, Fine, with 1987 P.F. certificate E. 300-400 180.00

Nov. 17" circular datestamps on 3c Red Nesbitt entire to Germany, rare red "N. York 8 U.S. Pkt. Nov. 28" credit datestamp, blue Bremen transit, 1857 receiving backstamp, 1c stamp placed over left edge and somehwat faulty as a result, from a new correspondence (see lot 242) and a bit wrinkled and worn, still an attractive mixed-issue franking and very scarce New York credit marking E. 500-750 525.00

Dec. 26" circular datestamps on cover to Vienna, Austria, also tied by red New York 7c credit datestamp, neat "Paid" handstamp, red framed Aachen transit, receiving backstamps, minor edge wear, Very Fine and scarce usage of a strip containing a pair of the Type IV, signed Ashbrook and with his notes on back, with 1996 P.F. certificate (Image) E. 2,000-3,000 2,900.00
