ASIDE FROM THE THREE COPIES ON A PART DOCUMENT, THIS IS ONE OF ONLY FOUR SOUND EXAMPLES OF THE 5-CENT THIRD ISSUE WITH INVERTED CENTER. ONLY TWENTY EXAMPLES ARE KNOWN IN TOTAL. In his privately published census, Larry Lyons records twenty examples of the 5c Third Issue with inverted center. Of these, three are on a part document. Of the seventeen off-document copies, thirteen have faults of varying degrees, the most common being creases (nine). The centering on the example offered here is better than most. Ex Lyons. Issue, Inverted Center (R144a). Deep rich color, used on
partly-printed August 5, 1872 Administrator's Bond from Chatham County,
Georgia, manuscript initials and "August 5/72" date, some minor
splitting along document edgesEXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF TWO RECORDED USAGES OF THE $1.00 SECOND ISSUE WITH INVERTED CENTER ON ITS ORIGINAL DOCUMENT. AN OUTSTANDING RARITY. In his privately published census, Larry Lyons records an total of 26 copes. The other recorded document bears five copies of the error and is also used with a normal $1.00 stamp. These are the only complete documents bearing revenue inverts above the 2c denomination (one piece is also recorded). The example offered here was purchased by Mr. Zoellner in our 1989 Rarities of the World auction, where it was described as coming from a new discovery. (Image) |
