Japanese Chop applied to mail from Japan, full and clear
strikeEXTREMELY FINE EXAMPLE OF THE 90-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL WITH RARE JAPANESE CHOP CANCEL. The distinctive Japanese bamboo "chops", as they are called, were used to cancel stamps on mail originating at the United States consular post offices in Japan between 1867 and 1871. They are easy to identify by the shape and grayish ink. A substantial number of 10c 1869's exist with these chop cancels, both on and off cover. We are aware of three 90c 1869 stamps with the same "X" chop, and, based on the early impressions and colors of the stamps, they appear to have been supplied to Japan from a very early printing. With 1987 P.F. certificate. (Image) |
