Group of three interesting items: Jan. 10, 1845 folded letter from New York
City to Baltimore with note in ms. "Penny Post will please deliver.
Single.", and two Baltimore P.O. receipts signed by Charles T. Maddox,
dated 1842-43 during Finley's postmastership (Maddox was postmaster during
period when first carrier stamps were issued), receipts include line item
for carrier fees on delivered mail, unusual exhibition items, ex Kelly (Image) |

Manuscript "Paid 4".
Extremely rare prepayment of drop-letter rate (2c) and carrier fee (2c) on
blue folded letter to the Bishop of Maryland in Baltimore, blue "Baltimore
Md. Aug. 18" circular datestamp with matching "Paid" and "2" in oval -- the
sender's choice to prepay 4c probably explained by content, a letter from a
young Episcopal cleric asking his Bishop for a charge so that he can be
married -- fresh and Extremely Fine, ex Kelly and illustrated in his
CCP series (Vol. 51, No. 3, p. 148)

Large "PAID" in Frame. Red
handstamp struck on four folded letters from the Beatty correspondence to
Hagerstown Md., each with blue Baltimore circular datestamp and rate
marking, this scarce marking is believed to have been applied to the top
letter in bundles to indicate payment of postage and possibly carrier fees,
accompanied by two folded letter with "Jas. M. Buchanan" printed cut-outs
affixed to resemble provisional stamps, Very Fine and interesting group, ex
