 5c Red Brown, 10c Black (1, 2). 5c large even margins (lightly creased by file fold), 10c horizontal pair with huge margins (sealed pre-use tear into "X" at bottom right of left stamp, but barely noticeable),
tied by blue grids, matching "Buffalo N.Y. Aug. 13" fancy double-oval datestamp on 1849 blue folded cover to Edinburgh, Scotland, pencil "24", carried by American packet with red "3" credit handstamp at right, struck three more times on
each stamp (causing small indentations) - the exchange office was evidently not satisfied with Buffalo's light blue grids - red Edinburgh receiving backstamp (Sep. 5, 1849), few bleached specksVERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE COMBINATION 1847 ISSUE FRANKING WITH A COLORFUL ARRAY OF MARKINGS. VERY FEW COVERS EXIST WITH THE 24-CENT U.S.-BRITISH TREATY RATE PAID BY 1847 STAMPS, AND ONLY FIVE HAVE 5-CENT AND 10-CENT COMBINATIONS STILL INTACT. In addition to this cover, we record an 1847 cover from Mobile to Manchester with a 10c pair and 5c paying the 24c treaty rate (ex Pope, Garrett and Kapiloff), the two Noble covers to Nova Scotia with 1847 combinations, and a third cover to Nova Scotia (ex Hart). These are the only intact combination frankings for the 24c treaty rate. Other examples of treaty-rate combination covers include a restored cover front and three other covers with 5c stamps missing or replaced. Lastly, there are two covers to Ireland and Scotland with 34c retaliatory rates overpaid by three 10c and one 5c 1847's. Perhaps a half-dozen other covers exist with five 5c 1847 stamps paying the treaty rate. This cover was recently uncovered in England and is offered at auction for the first time. The only cover with a comparable franking and destination - the cover from Mobile to Manchester - was acquired by the late Duane Garrett in a private transaction, circa 1979, reportedly for a substantial six-figure price.
