The troubled Galway line operated by John Orr Lever was founded as the Atlantic Steam Navigation Company in 1858. It proposed a steamship line from Galway (Ireland) to New York via Halifax. These two covers posted from St. John were carried on the same trip, almost certainly on the Pacific, which departed St. John for Galway on January 14, 1859, arriving January 23rd. Examples of covers carried via Galway are very scarce.

EXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF THE FINEST HAWKER FLIGHT COVERS IN EXISTENCE.

This cover, addressed to Navigator Capt. MacKenzie Grieve, is written in his own hand. Postmaster J. A. Robinson of St. John's overprinted 200 stamps, of which only 95 were used. The plane was forced down at sea due to a defect in the plane's cooling system after covering only 1,100 miles. The mail bag was immersed, and some of the stamps were washed off of the covers and replaced at a later date. This cover is remarkable for its freshness.
