FINE. THIS IS THE RAREST OF THE STRIDING MESSENGER STAMPS, ISSUED BY THE PHILADELPHIA DESPATCH POST, PREDECESSOR TO D. O. BLOOD. BETWEEN SEVEN AND NINE COVERS ARE BELIEVED TO EXIST.

The "R & Co." Striding Messenger stamps without any backgorund shading lines are extremely rare. There were only three Scott 15L3 covers in the Caspary collection, including the unique double impression. This stamp shows an extremely worn impression with the buildings at left and right almost completely missing. (Image Magnifier)

FINE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE "R & CO." INITIALS ON THE STRIDING MESSENGER STAMP WITH BACKGROUND SHADING LINES.

Although the Scott Catalogue defines 15L3 as "without shading in background", specialists are familiar with examples of Striding Messenger stamps with background shading (Scott 15L4) initialled "R & Co." and obviously issued by the Philadelphia Despatch Post. This example shows use of the stamp with the "Phila. Despatch Post" circular timestamp. (Image Magnifier)
