1982 C Pomeroy's Letter Express, 5c Black on Yellow Glazed

O'C" oval ds for local delivery on folded cover to N.Y.C.
street address, receipt docketing "Friendly Sons of St.
Patrick", light soiling, Very Fine. An enigmatic usage:
Pomeroy's Letter Express discontinued service gradually
beginning in August 1844, but covers are known dated as
late as September 16, 1844. The Boyd's oval on this letter
came into use in September 1844. Therefore, as a March
1845 cover it does not seem possible that Pomeroy could
have been involved. However, the physical characteristics
of the cover - notably the "Paid" tying the stamp where
the serifs of the "P"are impressed thru the stamp and
lettersheet - are convincing enough that we feel this may
represent an attempted (and successful?) late use of the
Pomeroy's stamp. It is also interesting that this "Paid"
marking was never used by Pomeroy, but is exactly like the
type used by Hale & Co. (see lot 1968 in this sale). If
Hale did, in fact, carry this letter into New York City
with the Pomeroy stamp affixed, this usage becomes all the
more fascinating................................................$ 650

1985 C Stringer & Morton's City Despatch, Baltimore Md., (1c)
Gold on Black Glazed (134L1). Margins all around,
unusually clear impression, uncancelled (as are most known
examples) but nicely tied thru lettersheet by gum toning,
used on light blue folded cover delivered from Baltimore
to Philadelphia street address outside the mails, no
government postal markings, docketing on flap "1850
Chester Cty Balto" indicates 1850 year date and Baltimore
origin##VERY FINE. THE ONLY RECORDED USE OF THE RARE
STRINGER & MORTON STAMP ON A LETTER CARRIED OUTSIDE THE
MAILS AND DELIVERED IN ANOTHER CITY, AN ACT PUNISHABLE BY
LAW. ONLY FOURTEEN COVERS RECORDED.##Stringer & Morton's
City Despatch operated for only three months from October
1850 through January 1851. The stamps are stylistically
identical to the Blood's stamps (Scott 15L12, 15L13 and
15L17). Steven Roth records fourteen Stringer & Morton's
City Despatch covers with the adhesive stamp (Chronicle
173, pp. 20-21). Three of these are addressed to
Philadelphia, the two other covers have Baltimore
datestamps and "5" rates for government postage (the local
service brought the letters to the post office). This
example is remarkable in that the street address and lack
of government postal markings or postage strongly suggest
that a Stringer & Morton's carrier delivered the letter
all the way to Philadelphia, an illegal inter-city letter
conveyance. The receipt docketing confirms delivery, and,
if the post office had been involved - even receiving the
letter as way mail - markings would have been made to
indicate postage paid or due. In the past there has been
speculation that the proprietors, Stringer and Morton,
were at one time involved in the local post(s) of another
city.##A major local post rarity. Ex Brown....................$ 7,000
