COMBINATION OF THE 10-CENT CARMINE AND 5-CENT DE LA RUE ON
AN ADVERSITY COVER. AN OUTSTANDING EXHIBITION ITEM.##This
cover is signed by Dietz and was part of the Storrow
collection (acquired by Col. Green and sold as part of the
Green estate). It was also part of the Robert Wiseman and
Jack Solomon Confederate collections. Throughout this
period of ownership it was always classified as a true
Carmine. After the Solomon sale, the Philatelic Foundation
rendered an opinion that the 10c stamp is the Rose Carmine
shade (not Scott 5a, but a variation of Scott 5). We
respectfully disagree with the P.F. on this color
classification. A supply of Carmine stamps is known to
have reached Knoxville, Tennessee, in July 1862, as
evidenced by two of the indisputed Carmine covers (see
1983 Rarities sale, lots 410 and 411). It is generally
accepted that the Carmine color comes in a range of shades
from a dull or dark Carmine to an intense shade with an
almost wax-like impression. This variation resulted from
inconsistent ink mixtures, but the Carmine can be
distinguished from the Deep Rose and Rose Carmine shades
of Scott 5 by its richness and heavy red
            saturation.##Offered as a Scott 5a, subject to
