1" in frame, slightly reduced at left##A VERY FINE AND
EXTRAORDINARY COVER FROM HAWAII TO A UNITED STATES NAVY
MEDICAL OFFICER WITH THE ATLANTIC BLOCKADING
SQUADRON.##This cover was sent during the brief Eighth
Period of Hawaiian postal history, when the Honolulu and
San Francisco post offices misinterpreted the ship letter
provisions of the Act of July 1, 1863, and incorrectly
applied the 10c contract ship rate to Hawaiian mail (see
Meyer-Harris, pp. 73-74). In this example, San Francisco's
mistake is clearly evident with the "Due 4" marking added
to the 6c prepaid U.S. postage, making up the misconstrued
10c rate. The correct U.S. postage of 5c was more than
prepaid by the two 3c 1861 stamps. At New Orleans the
letter was marked "Free" and advertised for delivery to
Titus Munson Coan, a medical office on board the U.S.S.
Sebago. We know of no other example of Hawaiian mail
addressed to a Southern port during the Civil War..............$29,000
