II/III/I (14/15/13) vertical combination strip of three with left sheet margin, from the bottom left corner of the pane, large margins all around, deep rich color, tied by "New Orleans La. Aug. 8, 1857" cds on 3c Red Nesbitt entire addressed in blue to "St. Julien pres Geneve, Etats Sardes" and correctly prepaid for 38c Prussian Closed Mail rate to Sardinia, red "New-York Am. Pkt. Aug. 15" backstamp, magenta "15" credit, red "Aachen Franco" transit, red "VIA DI SVIZZERIA" straightline, red "FRANCA" and "P.D." straightlines, routed thru Torino (Sep. 3 backstamp) where an Italian postal clerk caught the sender's mistake - St. Julien is located in Switzerland, not Sardinia - then re-routed North to Annecy and St. Julian (Sep. 4 backstamps)

A VERY FINE COVER AND OUTSTANDING FRANKING. ONE OF THE FINEST 10-CENT 1855 MULTIPLES KNOWN ON COVER AND THE ONLY RECORDED USE OF THE 5-CENT 1856 TO PREPAY THE 38-CENT PRUSSIAN CLOSED MAIL RATE TO SARDINIA.

According to our records of 5c 1856 covers, this is the only example of the 5c stamp used to prepay the 38c Prussian Closed Mail rate to Sardinia. Although the cover was re-routed to Switzerland, it did reach Torino, Italy, and probably would have travelled to Sardinia if an alert postal clerk had not caught the address error. Of the eight recorded 35c Prussian Closed Mail rate covers with the 5c 1856 and 10c 1855, this is the finest, by virtue of the 10c sheet margin strip.

Acquired by the owner in Europe decades ago and offered to the American market for the first time since then (Image Magnifier)
