Oct. 30" cds and "2cts." in small double-line circle on buff cover to New York City, c. 1861-62, redirected to Cambridge N.Y., reduced at left, still fresh and Very Fine, a remarkable late use of the distinctive Troy & New York Steamboat route agent handstamp on a letter carried by a non-contract steamboat, thus charged 2c due (this surcharge was valid between March 1861 and April 1863), illustrated in Interphil '76 exhibition catalogue

136° c Bust of Bearded Man. Well-defined strike in blue, three-quarter portrait of bearded man (possible likeness of Ulysses S. Grant?), with matching blue "Atlanta Ga. Sep. 6" cds tying 3c Rose (65) on magenta cover to Wall Ridge S.C., some toning and wear along edges, choice strike and Fine cover, Southern pictorial cancels are extremely rare, and this post-war reconstruction era design undoubtedly depicts a Civil War hero - although Grant (or Fremont) would hardly be hailed by the citizens of smoldering Atlanta
