Henry M. Whitney. First Postmaster of Hawaii, Newspaper Publisher and Printer. Bound volume of letterpress copies of correspondence dating from May 16, 1863, to February 10, 1866, 521 pp total, a
fascinating chronological review of Postmaster Whitney's affairs, with numerous references to ships' sailings and covering many subjects of significant historical interest, for example: a June 1, 1863, description of the current Hawaiian postage
stamps accompanying samples requested by a F. Harper Jr., numerous supply requests ("100 Novels (Omit Les Miserables, I have a lot of them"), an acknowledgement of payment with the remark "I thank you for your promptness, for printers
generally have to wait the convenience of their patrons", a June 25, 1864, letter to Rev. Henry W. Bellows, excellent content expressing appreciation of Bellows's efforts to aid soldiers thru the Sanitary Commission, original Hawaiian source
documents are exceedingly scarce outside institutions and archives (Image Magnifier) |

1851, 2c Blue (1). Crocker Type I, the left-hand position in form, very lightly canceled by red "Honolulu U.S. Postage Paid" circular datestamp, full margins, bright color and fresh, expert invisible repair at
lower right cornerAN EXTREMELY FINE APPEARING EXAMPLE OF ONE OF THE WORLD'S RAREST AND MOST VALUABLE STAMPS There are fifteen confirmed examples of the Hawaiian 2c Missionary stamp. Of these, four are part of museum collections, and another five are part of the Honolulu Advertiser collection. Thus, only six copies of the 2c Missionary remain in private hands, of which half are Type I stamps and all have repairs. This superb example was described in the Admiral Harris sale (Part I) as the "nearest known to uncancelled." While the Advertiser collection does contain an unused 2c Missionary, the stamp offered here is the most lightly canceled among the used examples. The design is free of any obtrusive marks or cancellations, and, therefore, this stamp is a rarity among rarities. Formerly in the collections of F. W. Ayer, Mirabaud, Kosack, Duveen, Lapham, Potts and Harris. Listed as number 12 in the Meyer-Harris survey and illustrated as Figure 33 on page 96 (Image Magnifier) |

1851, 13c Blue (3). Crocker Type I, large to huge margins, bright color, completely sound, tied by bold red "Honolulu U.S. Postage Paid May 21" circular datestamp on piece with part addressA REMARKABLE AND ABSOLUTELY SUPERB MISSIONARY, DESCRIBED IN THE 1957 CASPARY SALE BY THE LATE HERBERT BLOCH AS "UNQUESTINABLY THE FINEST MISSONARY STAMP IN EXISTENCE" The same Caspary catalogue entry also described a faint bend at bottom, but we find no evidence in fluid that this has affected the Missionary stamp in any way. This stamp realized $4,750 in the Caspary sale. In comparison, a 2c Missionary in the same auction realized $5,250, only slightly more. Scott Catalogue value quoted is for average repaired examples (Image Magnifier) |
