3c Ultramarine, Vertical Two-Thirds Used as 2c (114c). Right portion of single stamp tied by grid, on complete front of partly printed tax notice from Luray, Virginia to Massanutton, dated Apr. 2, 1870, small
edge nicks far from text or bisectBased on the number and similarity of the few examples known, it has long been deduced that there was a shortage of 2c stamps at the Luray post office. One complete notice, two full fronts, and six "on piece" bisects are recorded. Ex Luff, Worthington, West, Haas. Illustrated in Brookman, Vol. II, p. 164 (Image Magnifier) |

1c Buff, 6 Ultramarine (112, 115). Single of each, cork cancels with 6c tied, on 1870 orange cover to Hessen-Darmstadt paying the rare 7c North German Union rate via Bremen, clear "Williamsburgh N. Y. Dec.
7" cds, red New York exchange cds and boxed Bremen datestamp, cover slightly reduced at top, stamps with light perf toning, FinePut into effect in July 1870, the 7c N.G.U. rate had the misfortune of coinciding with the Franco-Prussian War when France declared war on July 19th. Fearful of German ships being captured while at sea led the North German Lloyd and the Hamburg-American lines to keep their ships in neutral ports and to cease operations. Only two sailings were made in July and not until October 1870 did the North German Lloyd deem it safe enough to resume operations, sending ships from Bremen around the north of Scotland to New York, though sailings were irregular and the wreck of the Union near Rattray Head on Nov. 28, 1870 caused them to virtually abandon this route. Normal service was restored in February 1871, but the rate was reduced to 6c in October. Needless to say, covers showing the ill-fated 7c rate are very rare. This is an exceedingly rare example with the 1869 Pictorials (Image Magnifier) |
