Boldly struck quartered cork cancel, style and ink contemporary with the 1861 Issue, expertly repaired to replace small piece out of left, Fine appearance, with 1967 P.F. certificate describing this stamp as "used", however, in light of what we know about the First Designs and Colors, it would be more accurate to describe this as a trial cancellation (Image Magnifier)

THE ONLY RECORDED PLATE NUMBER BLOCK OF THE 10-CENT 1861 TYPE I STAMP, CONTAINING ONE OF THE FEW DOUBLE-DENOMINATION PLATE RE-ENTRIES IN UNITED STATES PHILATELY

The re-entry on position 94R4 was first reported by a stamp dealer, A. Krassa, in the Collectors Club Philatelist of July 1922. In his reference work on classic issues, Lester Brookman (Volume 2, p. 42) discusses the remarkable "previous entry" and makes reference to this unique block. It was discovered by Philip H. Ward, Jr., and sold in our 1969 Rarities auction for $3,200.00. Very few examples of position 94R4 have been discovered, the ex dos Passos copy, a used and slightly faulty stamp (illustrated in Brookman), was sold in our "Ex-Sheriff" auction for $3,750.00 (Image Magnifier)

THE UNIQUE AND FAMOUS 1861 3-CENT PINK PLATE NUMBER BLOCK FROM THE LUFF, WORTHINGTON, HIND AND WATERHOUSE COLLECTIONS

The early Pink shade is exceedingly rare in unused condition and even more so in block form. Virtually all of the few known blocks are faulty to a serious degree, this fact is reflected in the Scott Catalogue pricing, which values a block of four at $17,500 versus $18,000 total for four unused singles.

This unique plate number multiple was featured prominently in the Worthington, Hind and Waterhouse collections, at which time it was affixed to a piece of mounting paper. It has since been lifted, soaked to remove any gum, and rejoined where the perforations have separated. The color, centering and condition of this block are remarkably fine, and its importance as a key position block of the 1861 Issue is widely known (see Ashbrook article in Stamps, March 23, 1946, also Chapin's A Census of United States Classic Plate Blocks 1851-1882, p. 15).

With 1965 P.F. certificate. Scott Retail value for twelve singles is $54,000.00 (Image Magnifier)
