Postage Stamp Album. The 1863 Appleton, published by D. Appleton & Co. in 1863, as "Album for Postage and Other Stamps, American and Foreign." 7'/2X9Y2," 208 page spine gilt decorated, pages with gilt edges.
Stamps removed (a few have been cut-out), wear at corners and (a smaller edition was published in Dec. 1862, with two copies, one in green, the other in red, known to exist), twelve copies are known of this edition (American Philatelist, Mar. 1988)
and probably no more than 20 exist. At least five different bindings have recorded with three examples known with this binding, the so-called "Deluxe" Appleton, although two, both originally owned by George Turner, are in dark brown. To confuse
matters, this copy has been previously described as "Ex-Turner" although a typescript of a letter indentifies this copy as found among the papers sold at auction of a Andover Mass. family in the 1970s. The dark blue binding with this particular gilt
decoration may very well be unique (Image Magnifier)Search for comparables |
