2c Brown, 10c Yellow (113, 116). Three 10c Singles Used with 2c, tied by circle of V's on cover with Bavier & Co. Yokohama Japan brown oval return card on backflap, addressed to Manchester, England, and
endorsed "For Europe Via Pacific Railroad", bold magenta "San Francisco Cal. Apr. 16 Paid" exchange office cds and matching Large "4" Numeral Handstamp, Manchester May 6, 1871 receiving backstamp, small tears in flap neatly sealed, stamp at left with
minor perf toning, light wrinkles in cover barely affecting stamps The 32c prepayment on this cover includes 20c for the double 10c transpacific rate from Japan to the United States, plus 12c for the double 6c transatlantic rate to England. This
cover left Yokohama on the America, arriving in San Francisco on April 15, 1871, one day before the San Francisco exchange office applied the magenta datestamp and numeral "4". The meaning of this "4" marking is still a mystery. It was definitely
applied in San Francisco, as were the magenta "2" handstamps found on certain other single rate covers sent from Japan to Europe via San Francisco. The application of a "2" on single rate covers, and this "4" on a double rate cover, strongly
indicates that this is a rate marking (2c, 4c, etc.). However, there is no record of a 2c rate of any kind at this time, so the markings remain enigmatic. A Colorful and Very Fine 1869 Pictorial Usage from Japan. The Only Recorded Example of This
