3c Rose (65). Cancelled by two consecutive strikes of Walking Man with Hat and Cane, Remarkably Detailed Figure, smiling face, balding head with swept back hair at sides, hat in hand, cane tucked under
arm, all carefully defined, the first strike at left evenly applied, second strike at right weighted to right causing some slight distortion of features, but both struck from the same device. This stamp was part of the 1950's Keffer sale of
Waterbury cancels from the Mattatuck Historical Society. It has never been found on cover, but the style and excellence of carving strongly support attribution to Waterbury Postmaster John Hill. The P.F. has declined to render an opinion until a
cover is found, but considering the obvious fragile nature of this carving and the fact that this example is unique, we doubt that this cancel was used for more than one day or that a cover will be discovered. In our opinion, this is a genuine
cancel made by John Hill of Waterbury, and it is among his finest carvings (Image Magnifier)Search for comparables |
