Providence, R.I., 10c Gray Black (10X2). Extremely Fine Sheet Margin Stamp, tied on neat folded letter by black manuscript checkmark, and cancelled by the Red "PAID" pmk. The stamp is also tied by a cover
crease in the upper right corner of the margin far from the stamp's design, and barely tied by the Red numeral "10". The 1847 folded letter bears a clear Red "Providence, R.I. Jun 29" pmk. This letter is from the same correspondence and year date as
the cover sold in the 1955 Caspary Sale franked with a Pair of 5c Providence Provisional stamps, sent to the same New Orleans destination. The cover has been subjected to x-ray and nondestructive laboratory analysis. The red "paid" pmk 's ink is of a
different chemical content than the numeral & town pmks., however the tests conclude that both inks were commonly used during this period. The cover was withdrawn from the Philatelic Foundation prior to reaching an opinion after over a year of
examination by the Expertising Committee. Because the Philatelic Foundation did not reach a conclusion after considerable delay and expense, the cover is offered not subject to further expertising by the Philatelic Foundation, and is sold "as is"
only because the owner wishes to finalize its sale. It is our opinion and that of other postal history experts that this cover is genuine in every respect. There is only one other 10c Providence cover known and it is not tied (Image Magnifier)Search for comparables |
